iGaming Licences Explained: MGA vs UKGC vs Curaçao

Three of the most recognised gaming jurisdictions, compared on cost, credibility, market access and compliance weight.

Malta Gaming Authority

A long-established European regulator with strong recognition among payment providers and software suppliers. Applications examine corporate structure, funding, player protection and technical systems.

It suits operators targeting multiple European markets who want a credible base licence and reliable banking relationships.

UK Gambling Commission

The most demanding of the three, covering advertising standards, affordability checks, player protection and detailed operational reporting.

It is required for serving the British market and carries significant ongoing compliance cost, but confers considerable credibility.

Curaçao

Historically the fastest and least expensive route, now operating under a reformed framework with stronger supervision and direct licensing.

It remains popular for operators serving multiple emerging markets, though some payment partners apply extra scrutiny.

Choosing between them

Start from your target markets, then work backwards to the licence that permits them. Cost is real, but market access and payment acceptance usually decide the outcome.

Many operators run more than one licence, using a recognised base jurisdiction alongside locally required national permits.
