How to Choose the Right Jurisdiction for Your Fintech Licence

Jurisdiction choice shapes cost, timeline, banking access and credibility for years. A practical framework for deciding.

Start with the customer, not the licence

Identify where your customers are and which permissions their location requires. A licence that does not reach your market is an expensive irrelevance.

Passporting, equivalence and local registration rules all affect how far a single authorisation travels.

Weigh the real costs

Application fees are the visible part. Capital, local directors, office substance, audit, compliance staffing and annual supervision fees usually cost more over time.

Timeline is a cost too. A cheaper licence that takes a year longer can be the more expensive choice.

Test banking and payment acceptance early

Some jurisdictions carry reputational weight that makes correspondent banking and provider onboarding difficult, regardless of how sound the firm is.

Speak to prospective banking and processing partners before committing. Their willingness to work with a jurisdiction is a practical signal no brochure will give you.
