What is a high-risk merchant account?

A high-risk merchant account is a payment processing arrangement for businesses that card schemes (Visa/Mastercard) classify as high-brand-risk, typically iGaming (MCC 7995), forex/CFDs (6211), crypto (6051), dating (7273), adult (5967) and nutra (5122). It is underwritten by specialist acquirers registered under Visa VIRP and Mastercard QMP/RPP programs, usually with higher fees, rolling reserves and stricter KYC than standard accounts.

How much does a high-risk merchant account cost?

Pricing typically runs 3.5%–6.5% per transaction plus $0.20–$0.50 in scheme fees, a 5–10% rolling reserve held for 180 days, a $500–$2,000 setup fee, and monthly gateway fees of $25–$150. Crypto and iGaming sit at the top of that range; nutra and dating typically sit at the lower end.

How long does it take to get approved?

With a complete file (corporate documents, license, processing history, AML policy, website fully compliant) most high-risk MIDs are approved in 5–15 business days. Multi-acquirer setups for licensed iGaming or regulated crypto can take 4–8 weeks across all rails.

Why was I declined by a regular payment processor?

Standard processors (Stripe, Square, PayPal, tier-1 bank acquirers) restrict prohibited business categories in their AUPs. Gambling, forex, crypto exchanges, adult content, nutraceutical continuity, firearms and several other categories are blocked at underwriting regardless of business quality. You need a specialist high-risk acquirer, not a better application.
